Lucid dreaming: simple practices and a guided meditation

Lucid dreaming means knowing that you are dreaming while the dream is still going on. Some people have lucid dreams by chance, and many are curious to try. This page explains the most common practices in plain words, with no promise of results. You will also see what MeditaDream offers for your evenings: a guided session to prepare, gentle sessions for falling asleep and a Dream Journal. All of it is free, with no subscription, no ads and no account.

What is lucid dreaming?

In a lucid dream, you become aware that you are dreaming, without waking up. The dream goes on, but part of you knows it is a dream. Sometimes this lasts only a moment. Sometimes you can look around calmly, or even steer the story a little.

This is different from a daydream or a guided visualization, where you stay awake from start to finish. In a lucid dream, you are truly asleep. Lucid dreams cannot be forced, and many nights simply bring ordinary dreams. Gentle curiosity, without pressure, is the right attitude.

How to lucid dream: three simple practices

These are the practices most often described. None of them guarantees a lucid dream, but all three invite you to pay closer attention to your nights. You can combine them, or start with the one that feels easiest.

A lucid dream meditation for your evenings

Lucid Dream Preparation is a 23-minute guided session, marked as intermediate. It trains your attention to notice when you are dreaming, with the aim of waking up inside the dream. Listen to it in bed, shortly before sleep.

Body Asleep, Mind Awake, which lasts 24 minutes, explores the edge of sleep: your body drifts off while your attention stays present. If you would rather simply fall asleep, Drifting into Sleep lasts 16 minutes and ends with no wake-up. Once downloaded, these sessions play without a connection, so you can listen in bed with your phone offline.

Your dream journal, right in the app

MeditaDream includes a Dream Journal where you can record each dream, note its symbols and spot the ones that come back. Your entries stay on your phone, and there is no account to create.

Most guides start with dream recall, because a dream you forget leaves no trace. Keeping the journal is the simplest way to begin. It has three sections:

A simple routine, from evening to morning

Here is a gentle routine you can try for a few weeks:

Lucid dreaming without pressure

There is no set timeline. Some people have a lucid dream quickly, others much later, and some never do. Lucid dreaming is something to explore with curiosity, not a test you pass or fail.

The evening routine still has value of its own. You slow down before sleep, you pay attention to your nights and you get to know your inner images. If a night brings nothing special, write down what you remember and try again another evening.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone learn how to lucid dream?

Many people try, and experiences vary widely from one person to another. The practices on this page can make you more familiar with your dreams, but none of them can promise a lucid dream.

When should I listen to Lucid Dream Preparation?

In the evening, in bed, shortly before you fall asleep. The session lasts 23 minutes.

What should I write in my dream journal?

Anything you remember, even a single image or a feeling. Write it as soon as you wake up, before the memory fades.

Is a lucid dream meditation the same as a sleep meditation?

Not quite. Drifting into Sleep lets you slip into sleep with no wake-up, while Lucid Dream Preparation trains your attention to notice the dream itself.
